I loved reading this. This is a Pro-Social Learning Environment in action. I hope you write about what the kids notice first when they walk in.

Some students literally squealed with joy, others started laughing. It was a wonderful start to the day (and a new school year)!

Your classroom looks amazing! I generally loved being in a portable except for when the lawnmower came by and made it impossible for students to hear anything. Hopefully that won't happen to you!

Wow! Adrian you performed a miracle. That room looks amazing and that reading nook looks heavenly. Your students are so lucky to have such a thoughtful educator who really cares about them. I look forward to hearing all about your read alouds and new experiences in your classroom. I commend the fact that you have set up the room the way you feel comfortable with it. You clearly put a lot of thought into the research of seating arrangements, and in the end you did what was right for you and your teaching style.

My son was in my classroom this morning working on his homework when I saw the word thaumaturgy. I giggled and asked him if he knew what it meant, as he has a rather precocious vocabulary for a junior. He was unfamiliar with it and then I told him. He pulled out his phone and added it to the vocabulary sheet that he keeps, being the youth poet laureate and slam writer that he is. So, on behalf of him, I am supposed to say thank you for adding a new word to his dictionary. Personally, I think it's a practice that we should add to our résumés. Husband, Father, Teacher, Thaumaturgist, Coach. #ClassroomTetrisFTW

That’s great! I came across the word playing Dungeons and Dragons with my teenage children. I love the word and have been looking for a way to incorporate it into my writing. It’s a cool word! I can’t wait to hear how your son uses it in his next poetry slam.

I will keep you posted... And I will tell him that the challenge is accepted.

Thank you for sharing all this thoughtfulness. The environment is a teacher.

Your three weeks of anticipatory love of your students stand in stark contrast to the haggling over the first day of school and how much “pre-service” time is appropriate that we have experienced in NYC labor negotiations. I understand that you are initiating a new space, and that educators deserve rest and free time, but I pray that the spirit of your approach runs through the profession.

This year is the first time in my career that we received a full week of pre-service time (only 2 PD meetings) in our classrooms. I believe it was because of major complaints to the union last year. Still, I had much to do to prepare, so I worked a couple of weeks prior to officially returning for the start of the school year.
